Green Water

The last few times I have hooked up to city water in a RV park I have found the first basin of water I run into the back bedroom sink is green, almost the color of transmission fluid. It only seems to happen in this one basin. This motor home has never been winterized so there is no possibility of cross contamination with antifreeze. Is it possible I have some mold in my hose, or perhaps in the plumbing? If so, how should I clear this up? Thanks

Steve, let us know if you got the green out!

It only happens the first time and only twice. No taste to the water and no residual effects I can see. I am thinking the water sat in their system and I didn't flush it out before I hooked up as was suggested. We have stayed in a few almost deserted parks recently.

    Do you have a filter?

Hook up, First run water, Then hook up.. but if you have a filter clean and sanitize (remove filter cartridge, bleach, then soda, then flush, then replace with new cartridge)
  • Unused city water for a long time, sitting in copper pipes will do this. I wouldn't worry about anything wrong in your MH, but the next time you hook up to city or rv park water let the water run for a bit before you hook up.
  • We had this once and found green slime in our filter. We had been on well water all summer and then to city water for a week or so with days in between that we were not using any water. We cleaned and bleached everything including the inside of the water hose and haven't had it since. Of course we had to clean the filter holder with bleach and install a new filter also.
  • Green water can be caused by copper plumbing fixtures or pipes, that is off PH water has set in for a time. As the copper corrodes or oxides, it make the green color. Just a guess, as most RV plumbing is plastic.
  • You can run some bleach through your entire system to sanitize the system. Just pour some into your hose and then allow it to flow into your coach.
Whenever I want to use ANY water source, I always run some water through the hose first to see that it is clear BEFORE I hook up the hose to my coach. Then I use a filter right at my input to filter the water as it comes in to my water tank.
Some baking soda can be used to remove any odor or taste from the chlorine treatment.
