You can do what you want. From MY perspective as one who has replaced valves for 35 years, leaving them OPEN causes heavier waste to accumilate in the tank (oils and such). The valve blade when left OPEN, allows debris and sludge to migrate into the valve body of the valve. The valves are not designed to be left open. Black, you NEVER leave open, you just get a large smelly sludge that builds in the bottom of the tank. GRAY stinks more than Black because most people use Black chemical and very few use Gray chemical. I like to use the gray tank to flush out the Sewer hose when dumping the black tank. Doug
