A loose connection would be one thing to look for. Also look for dirty slip rings, sticky brushes in their holders, etc. While we see people cleaning slip rings with emery paper it isn't suggeated, there is a cleaning stone available from electrical supply houses that looks like a big abrasive eraser that should be used.
While you are checking out the brushes and brush holders confirm that the brushes are making good contact competely across the contact face. Sometimes they get cocked and don't make good contact. This shows up as irregular wear on the contact surface and greatly diminishes or completely eliminates generation of electricity.
Beyond that you are probably looking for a generator repair shop to get deeper into the unit.
