Haines

We were in Haines in 2006 and loved it. We stayed at a private campground (don't recall the name) and saw whales right from our lawn chairs. I don't remember anything significant about the road.

Really depends on your plans from there. If by land, absolutely you are back tracking.

If also considering visiting Skagway, you can take a ferry over to Haines (next stop on the Alaska Marine HWY).

Not sure Haines is worth a round trip by land-- if getting onto the ferry, either Haines or Skagway work.

Haines is an interesting little town and probably worth visiting...especially if you use it as a getting-on place for the Marine Hyway. We did this in 08 and spent 3 or 4 days there; mostly riding around on our bikes. There were some bears around so had to be careful.

Morning to get on the ferry, the mh wouldn't start and took me the whole weekend to find out that the nut holding the battery cable on the starter itself was not tight. We expected an increase in our ferry fee due to the fact we were three days late, but no... they just reschedule us and we continued as planned. Spent a week in Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan.

Road to Haines was just fine.

We took the Ferry south from Haines. Good road. Just one more gorgeous seaside village with mountains, whales, eagles bears. A day trip to Skagway on ferry was fun. Probably would not have gone there if not for the ferry. Do love the marine highway and southwest Alaska. We took the ferry all the way to Bellingham over a 10 day period. Next year will come bac as far as Prince Rupert.

Both Heins & Skagway are long down hill runs then long up hill back. Skagway is kind of a cruise boat driven town. A good way to see them is stay at a campground in or around Whitehorse, drive down to one, take the ferry to the other & back up to Whitehose.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Haines - back and forth. It's a quiet laid-back little town with beautiful views. To us, it was worth it but then we tried to see everything we could on the trip. With your motorhome you surely won't have any problem with the highway. Have a good one!

Load your DP on the Alaska Marine Hwy ferry from Haines to Skagway, or the other way around for a short boat trip and then you won't have to backtrack any and you get to see both towns. We did it with two 40' DPs last summer. The ferry crew is great and they're used to guiding even larger DPs on and off. There's plenty of room on the ferry, they put tractor trailers on there with 45' trailers. Both roads are fine.

Last summer, saw lots of bald eagles on the river while driving into Haines. Large grizzly by side of road eating berries on drive out of Haines. Thought mountain scenery from Haines Junction to Haines was spectacular.

Haines was one of our favorite places in Alaska. We stayed at Haines Hitchup RV Park. Be sure to make reservations. Beautiful sunsets and harbor. We walked to town from the RV park and saw eagles soaring overhead. http://www.baldeagles.org/preserve
