Has Anyone Upgraded Their Generator?

And if so, what changes did you have to make and what benefits, if any, were there? Thinking of going up from a 5k.
  • Thank you all. Lots of helpful information! I really enjoy this site!

We "upgraded" from a 5000 Generac to a 5500 Onan. the Generac was 18 years old and I always worried about it bursting into flames.

The Onan is so much quieter and the fire issue is moot.

Thought the 99 Tropical came with a 5.5, as well, but a better question is for where did you find an Onan of the same size, which has always been a problem with these transplants.

The tray that holds the generator had to be modified slightly but the compartment was plenty big enough to hold it ;()

  • You probably have an Onan BGE-FA 5K 2 cylinder engine that turns 1800 RPM. A possible drop in replacement would be an Onan NHM 7k 2 cylinder 1800 RPM. The old slow turning Onans had a low pitched hum. The newer faster turning Onans some times set up a resonances in you coach that you don't want to listen to.

The first thing that comes to my mind is if a 5k generator worked ok for the first 20 years, what changed?

Unless you need 2 rooftop A/C’s running full time without load shifting I don’t see what a bigger generator would do for you.

Just wanted to have the ability to run whatever I wanted when I wanted.

  • F4Jock,

Seriously consider what you are trying to do. Did you know that there is a turn-ratio for all machines? So, if you go bigger, you will pay for it all the time it is at less than full power.

  • What do you want to do that you CAN'T do now with the present one ??
