  • We spend the winters here in Havasu and I can say that we have had very few days of wind this year, which is unusual. This might be a good year to come to the balloon festival if the lack of wind continues.
The "night glow" event is very impressive to see when the balloons are all lit up at night.
  • We went two years ago and had a great time. Lots to see and do, lots of people to watch. My Granddaughter (full time with us) is really looking forward to going again this year. We will journey out to Oatman for a little burro entertainment and spend some time in Quartzsite with friends and the Big Tent Event. JH
  • We live here in Lake Havasu City AZ.
The launching, events and whatnot will be very different this year. You see, in the past, the major event was held on the island. It was one serious pain in the a$$ to drive onto or off that island when it was in session. But, this year, it's going to be held in the southern end of Lake Havasu State Park. It's not on the island but, just north of it, on the other side of the main channel. We've seen the balloons a few times and, it's a kick to watch all the folks as the prep for launching. I suppose that on Sunday morning, it will be just like it's been in the past, balloons launching from anywhere in the city they can. Some in the east, north, parking lots, open areas and more.

We usually go down to the channel and walk there. Many of the balloons try and do "touch and goes" in the channel water. That's a kick to watch. Yes, sometimes the wind will have an effect on just how many launch. We've watched folks get all prepped, start filling and, then just shut things down 'cause the wind picked up.

One never knows about the wind. The wind is the primary reason the drag boats ceased to run at Havasu. Anyway, it's a fun event. One of my buddies is a volunteer coordinator for much of the activities.

  • It's a lot different if you go up in a balloon but seeing them take off from the ground is exciting too. The view from above is great. Google the festival website for more info. The weather can be hit and miss so check the weekly forecast before you commit to driving. High winds are not your friend for the duration of the festival. There are lots of free BLM camp sites close to LHC if you are so inclined but the city fills up fast. Full service RV sites are available but you may be a little late in trying to find one now. If you like fire works the "Western Winter Blast 2018" is worth staying around for if you have time. This year its mid February. (4 nights of free fireworks) Havasu is a great winter playground if you have off road toys. In the winter, the water is a little cold if you are a boater. I've been going there for years so if you have any specific questions post them below.

  • Was there last year. Lots of wind. Very few balloon launches. Will be there again this year. Hope the wind don't blow. Huge garage sale on the island. Lots of things to look at around the bridge.
