We have been tent camping in the high areas around North central Arizona since the 60s and camped alot up to when I finally got into a off-road POPUP camper for the past 5-6 years. Have never run into any situation where a firearm would be warranted. My weapon of choice is a good strong ax handle and wasp spray...
I have to admit now with economy the way it is it could get nasty so always be aware of your surroundings...
We was tent camping up on Rocky Knob on the Blue Ridge one year and wife wakes me up saying she hears a bear outside. I get up with my trusty flashlight and bear spray canister and go look. Sure enough I hear some snorts on the other side of our tent setup. So I went slowly around to the other side and it turns out to be a guy snoring in his sleep in a POPUP trailer close by haha...
Was camping up at Wichita Mtns Wildlife Refuge at Camp Doris near Medicine Park OKla in my off-road POPUP and when we got up the next morning there was buffalo poop all over our camping spot. Guess the whole herd wandered thru there during the night.... Never heard a noise haha...
A couple of us radio guys camp up on the George Washington Natl Forest on the VA/WVA wooded state line near a spot called FLAGPOLE KNOB behind Harrisonburg VA. This is in conjunction with HAM RADIO comms events etc...You sure hear a bunch of strange noises at night but never felt unsafe.
