When I was 21, a friend and I almost were killed during an armed robbery. An old man saved our lives by not crying out when he was being kidnapped. I've often thought about him. He was brutally murdered. It changed my life.
So after that, I never went anywhere for about 12 years without a carry gun. In that time, there was one occasion thankfully I didn't need to get it out. I also became an expert in self defense, Getting a black belt in street self defense. I also am a certified handgun instructor. I've been around firearms since I was old enough to shoot a Bb gun. I practice with my carry gun a lot. Which is important.
Anyway, When Clinton got in office and the gun control bull started I quit carrying until when concealed carry started in Ohio.
Now I take a carry gun with me when out hiking. That's about it. I also take one depending on where I'm going. If we have reciprocity across all states, I take my handgun. if headed through the crazy eastern states I have my very benign pump shotgun in the Coach.
Have I needed it while camping no. Am I alert at all times? As much as possible. Can it happen to anyone? Yes
Be prepared! Always look for an escape route.its a bit paranoid, I know. But there are some very bad actors lurking around for an easy score. Don't be a victim.
So as I've gotten older and I arguably can't defend myself physically as much as when I was 35, I have these rules with the rv. I don't drive at night period. I try to be on my way early in the morning and at a destination by 2p. I keep the Coach fueled up every 250 miles. I keep the Toad full of fuel. I have multiple layers of protection. Great flashlight, I have a Maui Thai stick which I'm very good with. I have pepper spray. I have a serious 7 inch knife. Last resort would be to bring out a weapon.
I take more precautions when my wife if with me, she never knows it but I pay a lot more attention to my surroundings. When I get to a campground, I love people like most of you. So I talk with everyone around me if I can. I love people who camp generally everyone I've met are a load of fun.
It a bit of an obsession, but it's never been about me since I was 21, it's always been about prote citing my family.
