I do travel with firearms and have past military training and have a legal carry permit. As far as I am concerned, all of the good decent people out there should legally carry a weapon for their own protection and to help others if needed.
I am sure that the people killed in the various shootings never experienced an incident before but that is the point. You just never know when bad things will happen. A gun free zone is a free pass for a criminal.
I also carry insurance to protect me if I have to use my weapon and have legal assistance available 24/7 for $100/year. I also get the up to date book that explains the laws of the different states that I may travel in. As do 99.999% of legal gun owners, I follow the laws regarding the carry and use of my weapon. If you were parked next to me, you would never know that I am armed, which is how it should be.
I always find it strange that some people say that we should not lump all bad people of a certain ethnicity in to a group yet those are the same people that seem to want to condemn ALL gun owners. Since I do not travel in Canada, I could care less how Canadians feel about firearms. :R
I do seem to remember a long discussion about the Canadian couple that are still missing and their RV was found burned in Canada. You just never know when bad things will happen.
