I never expect an ambush. I couldn't protect myself at that point anyway. Smell trouble and avoid it. As a woodsman, I have several long ax handles laying around. They would keep anyone at arms length. Situational awareness, threat avoidance, a friendly smile while holding a bat, all have kept me safe for 50 years of camping.
