We had a very similar problem in Mexico, though after shutting down and restarting we were good to go for another 5 to 7 kilometers when it happened again (stuck in what ever gear it happened to be in at the time). After a 250 kilometer service call (making a long story very short) the problem was traced to a wiring harness that had fallen across the top of the engine and melted much of the insulation causing shorts. It was spliced at the side of the road and off we went. We had the repair checked by a shop in the USA who gave it a thumbs up.
I sounds very much like an electrical problem. I think it's a job for an authorised shop. but you may get lucky and find it yourself.
If you would like to read that story in detail it's on our blog under the sub heading PV to Maz, or The Blog Fodder Run. (Includes a broken mirror incident!)
Good luck, and please let us know what the outcome is.
