Help installing Hot Water Tank with Heat Exchanger

Hi,
I was in process of installing a new hot water tank that has a heat exchanger on it. When I went to disconnect the radiator hoses from the back of the old hot water tank I couldn't get the anitfreeze to stop coming out. I was expecting some to come out - the portion that is in the lines inside the hot water tank, but not that much. I finally put the hose back on so I would so losing anti freeze. I did check and the engine heater switch is set to off in the RV.

Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong or missing here?

  • I managed to find a plug that fit - new hot water tank is in. Thanks for all the help.
  • It appears that you missed the fact that BOTH hoses have to be clamped off for this trick to work. The valve in the system merely stops the circulation, There is still lots of coolant available.

Long nose vise grips do this well. clamp the lines off as close to the heater as you can and still work.

There could be some pressure in the coolant system. You could remove the radiator cap to ensure there is no pressure in the system.

The extra coolant could also be due to some sort of siphoning effect.

And, as a last resort, you could get a short piece of tubing that is the same size as the exchanger. Pull both hoses fast as fast can be and stick both hoses onto each end of the small tubing.

Be prepared for more liquid mess then you want to play with. Either rags or possibly a shop-vac to clean up the coolant that manages to escape despite your best efforts.

    Hope this helps.
