Help please

My husband and I bought a 98 Damon Daybreak last year. Miles 30,000. Used it only a couple of times last year. Just got it out of storage last night. While riding home, about 20 mile ride, husband noticed right front driver wheel, rim cover got very hot. He could feel the heat under his foot. Dealer can't see it for two weeks. Want to take it out for labor day. Does anyone know what this could be and is it safe to take out?? Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

  • Can we still take the RV to the Bills games, about 15 miles each way until we can have it fixed, or will that cause further damage?

Thank you all. Yes, it's the local Camping World where I bought this. They checked brakes when I bought it, and like I said, only used it a few times, mainly to go to Bills games. Never really got taken out and I assumed the brakes were fine when we bought it. Really, $500-1000??? Wow.

Well if you do the repair yourself you can just replace the bad caliper, but most brake shops will want to change the front pads as well and turn rotors and repack bearings, but if you need new rotors than the price will go way up..

  • Yup. Very likely a seized brake caliper. Not a difficult job for the average shade tree mechanic.
  • Is it an RV dealer that is making you wait?

There are lots of mechanics/car repair places that could take a look at that front brake (most likely cause). Make some calls.

Be sure they not only fix/replace that caliper, but flush all the old brake fluid out of the whole brake system.
  • If you don't have warranty than take it to any shop that can work on that chassis, Ford or Chevy dealer can also do the repairs, as the post above says sounds like a stuck caliper, be ready to drop $500-1000 for all new front brakes..
  • I assume it is a front-engine gas model? Could be an exhaust manifold leak, but you'd likely hear that. Only other thing that comes to mind is a locked up brake, but there it seems like it would pull to one side and smell of burning brakes. Not sure what else might be up there.
  • I would think you have a stuck brake caliper. I would hold off on using it until it I checked out JMHO
  • My guess is a frozen brake caliper. Happens often caused by rust with vehicles that are used very rarely. Any decent mechanic can wok on this, and possibly with just some lubricant, it could be loosened up.
