Helping In-laws -First RV Advice

Hello,

I'm trying to help my father and mother in law with their first RV purchase.

The following is general information I've received from them and trying to help them pick out a decent RV for the coming 10 years or so. I'm not very knowledgeable about RV's but I figured forums are a great place to get great advice and get them pointed in the right direction.

-The couple are 70 years young & live in central North Dakota
-Grandkids/kids in Minneapolis, MN & Asheville, NC
-Planning most trips for spring and fall as they spend most time at lake home in summer
-Want an easy to drive/park class "C"
-Want to spend a few month a year in the RV
-Want a bed that they can walk around with easy access
-Father in law is a Chevy guy, but not dyed in the wool
-Trying to figure out which features they want/need
-Father in law is handy, but he's looking for low maintenance (aren't we all!)
-What to look for in a used RV?
-Budget of roughly $35-40K (is this realistic?)
-Lower mileage the better

Overall, trying to figure out makes/models which might be a good starting point for them to look at. Also, regional dealers in ND, SD and MN who are trustworthy and reputable would be really helpful.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm planning to send this thread to them so they can ask additional questions or collect valuable insight!

thanks in advanced!

  • Class C would work well for them. Perhaps a smaller Class A gasser like a Tiffin Open Road 32SA would be suitable.
  • I agree that renting one maybe the first step just to see what may be a good fit.

On one of your points I may be of help on the Chevy Based Class C.

It is nice to see at the last gathering of RV MFG that they are offering more of their products on a Chevy Chassis than they previously offered in the last few years.

    Like these.

    Thor Four Winds or Chateau

Coachman Concord or Leprechaun or Freelander just click on floor plans to see them

Forest River Sunseeker or Forester just click on floor plans to see them.

    Jayco

This thread may be of help when comparing The choices of chassis.
    Chevy Based Class C.
  • Whatever it is that you and they think is THE answer...rent one like it before they buy. You have no idea how many people buy at a show or at a lot...and about a week into the adventure, begin to wish they hadn't so quick.
