Hitch Splitter or Hitch on Toad

There's also the front of the RV as an option.

Instead of a receiver splitter I have a ball tongue with a receiver above it. The bike rack slips in after I connect the dolly. My problem is there isnt enough clearance to lift off the dolly tongue with the bike rack in place.

I've had booth. The duel receiver when I towed an Accord Coupe and now a CRV with a hitch. Prefer the bike rack on the CRV. A bit easier to work with. Our normal camp site is a back in and getting the bikes down after setting the coach up can be difficult in some camp sites. With the rack on the CRV I can also first drive to the area I might wish to bike at if it's further away than I wish to ride. Down side is if I need something out of the back of the CRV the bikes can get in the way. 50-50 either way.

thanks for all the detail! One thing I'm wondering is if i'd have a problem with using the splitter with a demco kar kaddy ss dolly? I know the dolly steers. Is there any possibility of the towed hitting the bike?

This depends on your bike rack. I have a swagman and a dual hitch receiver. When we had a dolly it was never an issue because I put the bike rack in the upper receiver, the swagman was made in a way that it sloped up, and the wheels were held above the receiver level. Meaning the dolly could swing under it - not that I ever made that sharp of a turn. But if you have a hanging style rack, I would say there is a genuine concern that the dolly/car may hit the bikes in a tight turn. I'd measure that one.

that's a good idea, but i'm thinking we might put kayaks up on the van before too long.

i was thinking about this exact thing. i can see wanting my wife to drop me off somewhere with my bike to go camping etc for a day or so with the boys.

This is what I would do. Go on more adventures with rack on toad.

Just curious (I have a similar van) - why not put the bikes in or on top of the van?
Simpler than adding a hitch, unless you've already filled the van and roof rack with other stuff.
