Honda generators vs on board Onan gas generator.

We just bought a (new to us) Tiffin 34TGA motorhome to replace our 5th wheel. We are planning to take about two weeks to travel from Northwest Florida to Martinsville VA for a NASCAR race.....now comes the question. While boon docking, at the race track, will using my two Eu2000 honda generators linked together be more fuel efficient than running my on board generator? My DW says leave the Hondas at home, but I am just wondering...........

  • Thanks for the replys.....the generator on my coach is an Onan 5500. I used the two EU2000 with my fifth wheel and already have BIG chains and a huge lock. I agree that hauling the extra generators with extra fuel will take up much needed space.....
  • If I had to lug around two Hondas it would be because I didn't have an alternate generator source (an Onan for instance).
I do lug around a single Honda and use it 10 times as much as I do my Onan because it is quiet and fuel efficient.
But in the last few years of fulltiming, we boondock seldom so I'm thinking of doing the Craig list on my Honda. Its sooo easy to just hit the start switch instead of carrying extra gas, a chain and lock that offers practically no security.
  • While more fuel efficient what would be the point of showing up with a class A gas hog then whipping out gas sipping generators that you'll need to fill every 8 hours under medium load?

You'll spend $280 in petrol getting there and another $280 getting back. Spend another $10 on the Onan, leave the gas cans at home and enjoy the convenience.

  • Don't own one,but have parked near both and the Honda did not bother us compared to the Onan. Have met several over the past couple of years who carry a Honda in addition to the on board Onan. A 2k is on my "I Wanna" list.
  • I suppose it would depend a lot on the size of the Onan - most likely a 4000 or 5000 model. Will it be more fuel efficient? Maybe but is the extremely small gain in fuel efficiency worth the headache of lugging the two now extraneous generators around with you?
  • Take the Honda's, plenty of chain and a good lock.

Happy camping!!! See y'all down the road!!!:)
  • More fuel efficient - probably. Quieter - almost certainly. Easier to steal - you bet. Depending on where you camp, the Onan may be better suited to a Venturi type exhaust so you don't kill the people camped next to you with fumes (has happened). I'll be honest, I've never met an Onan gas generator I liked, I find them noisy and obnoxious to the point where I have picked up and moved if one pulled in next door. At a race track, i usually can't tell if my honda is running or not.
