My two cent worth. Most of our traveling in the last ten years has been in the Southwest. In some places the water is so hard and tasty you can chew it. Terlingua, TX was especially "memorable." I took out the ice maker and used the space for bagged ice. Then I figured it out...
I put the ice maker back in. Bought a Flo Pure softener backed up by a charcoal filter. Now, no water spots, good water and ice. Good enough for ice tea and coffee.
