House Batteries

Time for new house batteries. I've been running (4) Optima Blue Top Group D34M 12 volt batts. The current batteries are 5 years old and have been great batteries. Even when I added my residential fridge, I could get 3-4 hours or more off the inverter, assuming not much else was running. For me, this was more than acceptable. Since these things run $200-$250, I Was wondering what else is out there that would be comparable. Not that I'm complaining, just wondering what else everyone has tried.

  • If budget is of concern, look to wet cell batteries.....the most bang for your buck. With standard GC2 type golf cart batteries you should get maximum amp hour capacity for your buck....the trade off is a recommended monthly maintenance to keep clean and the water level up. By all reports and experience I have Optima are relative junk for the price. Interstate wet cell GC2 batteries are pretty much an industry standard for RVs. Should be equally good in a trailer.
  • The golf-cart batteries lasted 12 years for me.
Paid $46 a piece for them and new prices look scary to me.
  • Hi,

I switched from flooded lead acid to used telecom batteries this fall. They are a surplus acid AGM configuration. So far I love them--but they do have some quirks.

Cost was a big factor--they were 120 cdn each. Capacity is 139 amp-hours each.
  • Optimas are expensive. They used to be really good years ago. From what I've heard they are not what they used to be.
Either way some of their selling points are resistance to vibration and being able to mount them any direction. This made them desirable for off road racing, rock crawling, and boating. I doubt you do any of this with your RV.
Most any quality AGM battery should work well for you. I have installed hundreds of Deka batteries over the years with excellent results. Concorde also makes excellent AGM batteries. Either of these brands in a group 31 should do well for you.
What would be even better is 2 singe strings of batteries instead of 4. If you have the room and the strength I'd go with 2 size 8D batteries.
