Houston TX Campgrounds

I want to go around Houston traveling on I10 from east to west, sometime this summer and was thinking of using I610 to alleviate some of the city traffic. Would also like staying in a decent campground along that route for some sightseeing with the toad.
Any suggestions, either for a decent campground and/or a different route?
  • Head south to Galveston and stay awhile. Enjoy the water, the people and the area...or... head north to Lake Conroe. It's almost full and has some very nice campgrounds. We are headed there in a couple weeks....I'll have some pics posted on my blog by the time you head that way.....Dennis
  • I left Houston in 2011 after living there 38 years. I would drive straight through I-10 between 8pm and 6am but check ahead for construction especially on weekends. I wouldn't waste time or fuel going around one of the loops, Houston is a huge town.

No question-- just stay on I10. As long as you avoid rush hour, should not be an issue.

All other routes are WAY longer and/or very costly.

Can't remember if it was rush hour or not, but did go straight through in 08 and didn't much like it, with my chief complaint being that I10 kept exiting to the left and also to the right, while I always seemed to be on the other side of the freeway. Wasn't pulling a toad either. I mean people just won't give you a break these days and will rush around you, signals on or not. Let's see, RV is signaling ahead and the immediate reaction is to step on the gas without a thought of slowing down and allowing them to get over. Thanks for the rant.
Now, I just might want to stay the night or two, so again I might need a decent place to stay. Time or distance isn't much of a factor as we will just be touring the country anyway, traveling 150 - 200 miles per day.

I would just take I10 straight thru. Loop 610 is the same kind of road with the same or worse traffic, just more of it. If you want to avoid traffic badly enough to pay big bucks in toll charges I would recommend Sam Houston Toll Road. If you take that route around the south side, All Star RV Resort on 59 next to PPL is a good place to stay.

OK, and just about 40 miles on the parkway from the Cloverleaf area. So how much is the toll for a coach with 3 axles and then the toad with two and would guess that they count it the same as a vehicle with 5 axles? I did see a toll chart but can't quite figure out if we're talking the whole southern parkway or not?
