How level is level enough?

I understand that propane refrigerators need to be level, even when not in use. I even sorta kinda understand why.

But how level does it have to be? I have a level app on my phone which tells me that it's level within 1 degree when it's parked in the storage lot. Is that good enough?

1999 Santara Class C. The documentation is in the rig (I've stopped sleeping with it) but I'm pretty sure the reefer is made by Dometic; it has a separate freezer compartment.

Thanks!

Rich
  • Per Dometic:

    Leveling the refrigerator
Leveling is one of the requirements for proper operation with absorption refrigerators. to ensure proper leveling the vehicle needs to be leveled only so it is comfortable to live in (no noticeable sloping of floor or walls).
Any time the vehicle is parked for several hours with the refrigerator operating, the vehicle should be leveled to prevent this loss of cooling.
If the refrigerator is operated when it is not level and the vehicle is not moving, liquid ammonia will accumulate in sections of the evaporator tubing. This will slow the circulation of hydrogen and ammonia gas, or in severe cases, completely block it, resulting in a loss of cooling.

When the vehicle is moving, the leveling is not critical, as the rolling and pitching movement of the vehicle will pass to either side of level, keeping the liquid ammonia from accumulating in the evaporator tubing

    Per Norcold:
    Leveled Operation
The circulation of the refrigerant through the cooling unit is accomplished by gravity flow; therefore, the refrigerator must be operated leveled.
Off-level operation will effect the flow of the refrigerant through the cooling system.
The maximum off-level operation limits are:
    * 3 degrees from side to side
    * 6 degrees from front to back
Exceeding the maximum off-level limits can permanently damage the cooling unit.

The cooling unit or its performance are not affected when the vehicle is in motion

    Notice 3 things.......
Level when stationary and fridge ON
    Off level can cause damage
    Operating while in motion......no problem
  • Your fine. Many of us are half a bubble off on this forum time to time.
You will fine that getting the fridge close to level. Your stove or dinette table will be off.
So just get a happy medium.

My trailer is level front to back but I have it tilted a few degrees to the side opposite the door and awning. This allows my air conditioner run off go to the back side of the roof to run off...

On my POPUP I only need to get it level from end to end (FRONT to BACK) so that my door will open freely.

I have a bubble affixed to the frame here to show when the door is level enough to open.

I run my fridge alot when going down the road and it seems NOT to be bothered by any of this being our of level that you hear about. Runs just fine for me. We like to fire up the fridge on 12VDC when we get within a couple of hours of arriving at the camp site to get it started to being cooled down. We only run a couple of days out of the fridge for meals. Usually a WALMART or FOOD LION close by to buy fresh food from...

  • If you can walk around inside comfortably then it's close enough. As said above half a bubble is good.
  • It's my understanding that level is only critical during operation. "Within one degree" sounds pretty good to me, operating or not!
  • I have been in some pretty unlevel places,,everything worked and I know it was way outa level...
