How long until your holding tanks are full?

WE used our new MH for the first time, 2 weeks ago. When we bought it the indicator showed that the black water tank was half full (or half empty depending on your mood). So I dumped it in the morning. 24 hours later the tank was completely full to the point where you could not flush again. That seemed real fast to me. In the past we had gone boondocking in our old RV and the tanks lasted 4 people a full weekend. How long does it take you to fill up your tanks and how many people are with you when you are using it?

  • Men use the outdoor facilities and women use the RV facilities. Works best for us and I can say "I did not do it"

  • I allocate toilet use for a weekend for 4 people

    Each person gets 8 - #1's & 4 - #2's

They are allowed to make trades though.

The previous owner most likely let the black tank sit and go dry. The solid waste (aka Poop) is now like concrete. It will take some time, water, and soap to clear it out. Liquid Tide soap is a good wetting agent.

Never use any drain cleaners, they will damage plastic tanks, rubber seals...$$$.

Dump...Fill with water and soap, let sit, drive with a few good STOPS, dump.

Then start over. It may take a few times. (A CLEAR hose fitting will let you see what progress you are making.):p

(By the way, the chemicals sold at RV stores and walmart are not any better than just soap....Just $$$ down the drain :)

Been there done that....Guess what problems my kids bring to DD to fix?
  • Our black tank is 48 gal and the grey is 52. When boondocking with our 100 gal of fresh water we can go for 10 days. For greater comfort we sometimes only go for 7 days. We are in an RV park right now and our black tank, with generous flushing, lasted a week with 2 of us.
  • Yep there is something not working right. Our black is 30 gallons on my 5th wheel and it will handle me and the wife for a week. No problem.
  • Do you have the dreaded poop pyramid? If you don't add a few gallons of water after dumping this could be your problem.

It is highly unlikely that it would be possible to fill a black tank in 24 hours unless you have many, many folks on board and you were drinking a lot of beer! One possibility is that you have a leak in the toilet but that would have to be a leaking valve going in and the tank itself leaking out (unlikely).
It would be more likely that when you dumped you did not get a good dump. That could mean a clog, a "pyramid" or some similar issue.
As mentioned above, what RV is this, but I can't think of any RV that would fill a black tank in 24 hours of normal use.

It would help if you told us the size of the tanks in your Admiral. My black and gray tanks are both 57 gallons and 100 gallons of water. The two of us can Boondock for seven days without cutting back on anything and without shifting water from the gray tank to the black tank. Both tanks are on the same level so I can go another two days by opening the valves to the two tanks and letting them equalize before having to dump.
  • Magilla, that is a loaded question... LOL! It all boils down to how big are your black and grey tanks?

We never have more than 'us' (2 people) so we can go for a while. In the old coach, we had 70 gallon grey and 40 gallon black tank. We had 100 gallon fresh.

I boondocked by myself at Quartzsite with a RV group for 5 days for about 4 yrs. in a row. I would use about 50 gallons of fresh water and not fill the holding tanks.

I don't mean to be gross but, I would put the 'blue' holding tank liquid in the potty and not flush after maybe several tinkle sessions. Only when it was 'necessary ' to flush is when I would flush. That saved unnecessary flushing to fill the black tank.

Make sure that the tank is emptying completely.
