How many do you know who quit the "Class A" life?

I'm curious about the people you know who purchased a Class A Motorhome, didn't enjoy the life and sold their motorhome?

I don't mean those who left because of illness to them or illness in their family or anything like that! I'm talking about those who dropped out because they just didn't enjoy the life/lifestyle.

Thanks
  • Hi S, and that would not surprise me at all. We will keep our Florida home and will be there the majority of time for the kids, grandkids etc. We have friends all over the country and believe seeing them in our Motorhome is a good way to travel.
  • We owned 2 different Class A's. Both gave little trouble but were very expensive to maintain (Ins., Taxes, Servicing, Tires, campgrounds, etc.) We sold and have never been happier. Anyone wanting to enjoy the lifestyle, and we did enjoy the traveling, just be sure you have ample funds to support it.
  • Hi Frank, that's one of the reasons I'm buying new. One for the warranties and the other for knowing how it's kept up. I know stuff happens, I just want to limit the exposure as best I can!
  • A small percent of people (usually one spouse not both) find they don't like the lifestyle because they love their stick home and sense of community, they miss being close to family (usually small grandkids) all the time, or they find that they don't like moving around and not staying in one place long enough to build friendships. We have found it's a very small percent of people. Most people we've met in the 7 years of full timing love it and can't imagine giving it up. We enjoy meeting new people along our travels and keep in touch with those new friends. As far as family, our grandchildren are older and our children and grandchildren have their own lives and now when we visit them we enjoy it more. The question to ask yourselves is "are we homebodies or do we like adventure and meeting new people" ?
  • In our case, we couldn't justify raiding our IRA funds for about half the cost of each trip. This was when gasoline along the Oregon Coast was around $4.50 a gallon on our last trip in 2014.

We also started having equipment failures (the fridge - $1500, the generator - still dead when we sold the rig). We enjoyed using the RV, but the cost drove us away.
  • Leaving out illness or financial issues, I suspect most fall in two categories; those who got into RVing with no previous exposure to it and then found out it was not really what they had thought it would be or wanted it to be, and those who have done it for years and it basically just got old and they wanted to go a new direction.

You probably answered your own question. It isn't solely based on just owning a Class A whether for weekends, snowbirding, or full timing either. The cost of the RV is irrelevant.

When you are done with RV'ing, you are done, and you know when that time comes.
  • Hi Dutch, not such a simple question is it? I mean people who invested money into the purchase of a Class A Motorhome and then decided it isn't for them. My wife asked the question and I said I don't know but I know those who would.

I asked from the Class A standpoint because it's a large cash investment. It's much easier to walk away from a tent or a pop-up.

Maybe the question is "What are the MAIN things people don't like"?
  • I've known a number of people that drifted away from RV'ing in general over the years. Not specifically from any one class of RV though. Are you thinking of full or long timers in relation to Class A's? Or are you including weekend/vacationers as well...
