How to set Windshield Fans? What works for you?

On our class A, the driver windshield fan points at the center of the windshield and the passenger fan points to the rear of the motorhome. This creates sort of a circular path of air across the windshield.

I got to wondering, is this how other people have their fans adjusted? Is their purpose more to move air in the body of the coach or is it to blow air on the windshield to help keep it clear? (We never drive in snow or ice - we have needed to defrost the windshield to clear condensation after a cool night).

How do you have your fans adjusted?
  • When I was running the generator and rooftop A/C, the wife would set up a very quiet Vornado 120 volt fan in the living room floor, and blow that towards the drivers compartment. This provides much more airflow than a 12 volt fan, and is also fairly quiet.

I also found that the electric sun shade can reduce the heat in the drivers area to, and made driving more comfortable. I can adjust it slowly up or down to get the exact amount of shade I desire, or increase the amount of mountain views I can take in, very handy.

  • They are adjustable and their purpose is to keep condensation off the windows, assisting the defrosters. You will even find them in class 8 over the road tractors. In the hot summer months, we adjust ours to blow air on us. Going south in February we use the to assist the defrosters in keeping the windshield and side driver's and passenger windows clear.
  • The drivers side fan is adjusted to blow just over my head. It then hits the wall of the slide and bounces back across the drivers seat to help keep me cool. The DW moves hers all over the place based on her energy bursts:)
  • I've got a couple of built in ones that blow down across the windshield....at least I think so as I've never turned them on.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions! Looks like the options are:

    1. Point fans at Driver & Passenger to keep them cool,
    2. Point fans at windows to keep them defrosted, or
    3. Point one fan at the front windshield center and the other at the MH rear to circulate the air in the coach.

There is no clear consensus of most frequent settings. What is YOUR vote?
  • I point the fans to defrost the windshield. I use the shades and air conditioning to keep myself cool.... my wife is always cold.
