HW surge protector installation

Progressive HW 30A installation at Prism 24g
I have three 12/2 wires in the 30A receptacle box, one from generator, one from
converter and shore power cable.
Converter suppose to have transfer switch.
Coachmen tightened shore power cable and gen output cable together and
converter to the receptacle.
My dilemma is : input at surge protector will be wires from shore power cable
and output Romex 12/2 from generator ( w/o additional transfer switch ) and output at surge protector Romex 12/2 to the converter. Correct or incorrect

  • Depending on where you mount it, you might consider a spacer between the unit and the material it's mounted to.

    For example: http://forums.motorhomemagazine.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/27477968.cfm

Mine has been mounted to thin wood for ~4 years (inside a cabinet). It also gets a hot spot where the relay is mounted. It's probably no big deal, but it discolored the wood a bit so I added some spacers to help air flow and dissipate heat.

Other than that, it's been a great unit that I would buy again.
  • 2 ways to install a 'Hard Wired' PI 30A

One is just with protection when using RV Power Cord (Installed before transfer Switch where power cord was connected)

    Generator >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
RV Power Cord >>>>> PI HW 30A >>>>> Transfer Switch >>>>>> RV Main Power Panel/Converter

Other is protection when using RV Power Cord OR Generator (Installed after transfer switch where main panel was connected)

    Generator >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
RV Power Cord >>>>> Transfer Switch >>>>> PI HW 30A >>>>> RV Main Power Panel/Converter

  • In that case I'll be "transfer switch" until I buy and install TS.
Coachmen stated in generic owners manual that converter already have TS.
  • @enblethen,
I'm going install EMS HW 30A to the shore power cable, that's means that I have manuly disconnect
shore power cable from receptacle and use shore power, if I need gen power I have plug in receptacle shore power cable.
In both cases I will have surge protection through the EMS.
  • You have two choices
Buy transfer switch and install it or
Set the HW 30A up with cable connectors to use it only for shore power connections and not hardwired into system.
  • Hi guys,
Thank you for reply, my foul on typing, wires are 10/2 ( 30 A).
Last night I wake up and do my homework on wiring diagram, and clear for my self that I have two solutions to install surge protector.
1.- buy transfer box and wired all together or
2.- install surge protector on shore power cable
@enblethen, my rig is Coachmen Prism 24G, and have the receptacle where when I want gen power I have to plug in shore power cable and when I want use shore power
that need to be unplug and plug in to the shore power source.
  • You may also want to open the box to see if it is actually the transfer switch.
    Make and model of converter?
  • You should add your rig to your profile to make it easier to understand question better.
The rig should be wired with 10/2 with ground not 12/2 with ground.
Some rigs require that the shore power cord needs to be plugged into a genset receptacle in the compartment with the shore power cord.
The Progressive unit needs to be wired into the shore power wiring and not connected with the genset wiring.
  • 30 amp should be 10 gauge wiring, not 12. Not following how your wiring is. But the PI box should be wired between your converter and power source.
