Respectfully, roads like highway 1 are what RVing is all about. If you don't want to explore roads like this, I question the need for an RV. Might as well take Southwest Airlines if you don't want to experience the beauty off of the freeway.
Highway 1 is the most beautiful road I have ever driven in my life. Sure, some parts are narrow, but as I recall the speed limit is 55 mph or less and there is zero truck traffic as it is prohibited.
However, Please name me another road in North America where you can watch whales from your driver seat. Picture #1 shows me doing just that in my previous motorhome.
Please do yourself a favor a take a few days to drive this route, stopping here and there to camp. Don't be afraid of turning that steering wheel a little. There is no race on this road, everyone is on it to view the amazing scenery that God has blessed us with. There are no major cities on the route and highway 1 is not the fastest way to anywhere. The only people on it are tourists. I have been on many beautiful roads in almost every state, but when my family talks about our RV trips, this is THE ONE! We stopped on the side of the road every day we were on this road to eat lunch with the mighty pacific banging away on the rocks. Watching Whales, Otters, Sea Lions, swimming below. Amazing.
I do not ever remember cars building up behind me. I don't remember much traffic at all on the road. (We drove it on weekdays, might try that)
