I live in Stanley NM. Very close to this shortcut I would not take this in the winter
I would go further south on I25 and pick up us 285 to Clines Corners on I40 longer than us84 but shorter than I 25 to I40 and much better roads. The winter time issue is blowing snow not much to stop it and when it does drift it really drifts. 1/2 " of snow can make big drifts and completely close the roads but you can still see the grass because of the wind blowing the snow
