I want high idle

Is there anyway to get my 8.3 cummins to go on high idle? I drive motorcoach bus and on them you just set the cruise in order to get them bumped up to 1100-1500rpm while sitting.. I've tried that on my RV and nothing.. Any ideas??

Yes, it should be avoided, and for that matter just isn't necessary. (I'm thinking of the folks that "warm up" their engine for half an hour before leaving a campground, early in the morning and usually in the campsite next to mine ...)

But per Mike Cody at Camp Freightliner, if you kick it up to high idle (I forget what the exact RPM threshold is), it doesn't "count" as "idle." If I recall correctly, this was in terms of Cummins warranty issues, because excessive idling is so bad for your engine that they can hold it against you on a warranty claim.

    Or something like that ...
  • On mine the high idle is on the turn signal with the cruise control. With engine running slide the "switch" on top of the turn signal towards the steering wheel.
  • Just got our 2000 Newmar MA4092 in April and have made 4 trips so far totaling about 400 miles.

I haven't tried the High idle thing but I will today. As for the high-med-low switch, that controls my (top of windshield) overhead fan speed. Adjacent to it is the actual on-off switch for the fan.

  • OK, don't laugh but sometimes simple is better; cut a stick to the correct length to go between your seat and the accelerator pedal.:B
  • OK, I have a 2000 Newmar Dutch star 3883. It has the cummins 8.3 Just purchased it so I'm kinda new to all the buttons. My E-brakes or Jake brakes if you will, I really don't understand. I have a pedal on the left side of the floor that if I push that It will shift the tranny into 4th gear and it will slow it down, as soon as I let go of the pedal it shifts back to it's previous gear. Also on the right side of the steering column there is a toggle switch that someone had put in and it says BC in the up position and just C in the down position and I'm assuming in the neutral position is nothing. I have no clue what that means. And as if that weren't enough on my switch panel under the radio I've figured out most switches but there is one I cannot figure out, it just simply says high, medium, low. Other than that it has nothing indicating what it is, I've tried pushing it as I'm using the jakes but nothing changes.. Don't know... I'll figure it out eventually I'm sure.
  • Mr Coach,
Well, you said you tried the cruise control, right? And it had no effect? Not sure where to send you now as, like other posters have replied, ours too works with the cruise. But, you don't have to have the engine brake off on ours. The cruise doesn't care whether the e-brake is on or off. At least that's the way it is on ours.

Now, ours is an '04 Itasca Horizon with the 330, C-7 CAT. And, yes, we do have the "Smart Wheel" so, on otherwise equipped coaches, i.e. non-smart wheel, Cummins engines, etc. I'm not sure of the procedures for idle step up on those. Be sure to let us know what make and model of coach you have so, if someone's got an identical coach/engine etc. they may have an answer for you.

  • On my coach I turn off the engine brake and turn on the cruise while in N then just press cruise set. High Idle
  • If you have the "Smart Steering Wheel", as you described. Turn cruise on. Press set.

What coach/chassis/year etc is your rv?
