Cummins auto high idle question

Intake temperature is used to determine high idle. Really cold initial starts will force it to high idle immediately. If left idling they will ramp back up. Even my '05 does this. Cold starts and it may go directly to 1k rpm, and it was so cold last year that after I got done running down the interstate (with car hauler trailer), I couldn't even get my side gate open before the truck ramped up even while the coolant temp was still above 180.

Your truck is fine.

If your truck has a block heater (110 chord hanging out ) use it, plug it in during cold weather.

My old '03 PS did the same thing. Went to normal idle after awhile of running or by stepping on brake pedal to move from park. However, on my '15 PS, it too goes to high idle (both after being plugged in), BUT it will not go to normal idle after stepping on park to move from park. Tho I have the PS and you have a Cummins, I'd say it's normal.

Just wish I could figure out how to raise idle when stopped for a lengthy time. Semis use the cruise to do it.

It does not sound right. Just bought a new (2014 year model) RAM 5500 with 6.7 engine and it only goes in high idle (1100 rpm default) when I set it through the cruise control.

Another reason it goes to high idle is the draw on the batteries from your grid heater. My old Ram would go to high idle even with the exhaust brake on in cold weather.
The block heater plugged in 2-3 hours would eliminate the need for the grid heater and automatic high idle feature. The cab would warm up faster too :w

My '15 also fluctuates as needed - I guess the computer is smarter than I am.. I used to do the cruise control trick till I realized it's no longer needed.. Check out the replies on the Cummins forum as well.

It's normal depending on outside temp. My question was it going immediately into a high idle vs. waiting a few mins. Sounds like that's normal too though.

You're in OK so never gets reeeeealy cold there, but a nice feature is to have the manula high idle activated. Fire it up, set P brake, turn on cruise control, adjust high idle up to 1500 rpms if you want for faster warmup.

Also, I've read plugging it in isn't necessary at the temps we've been having but I'll start and see how it does. Maybe the kids won't freeze all the way to school in the am.

My 2006 model does it too. Not a problem.
