- Kayteg1Explorer IIMercedes put self-driving car on the freeways few years ago (don't think they can plan the trip though).
For legal reason the system disengage when driver takes hands of the steering wheel for few seconds.
Smart guys fooled the system by hanging a can of Coke on steering wheel.
Pepsi works too. - SoCalDesertRid1Explorer IIMay as well just take a train
- DutchmenSportExplorerHey all! Since this topic has come up ... do you all remember this YouTube video that came out last April! It was posted on RV.net and it stirred a LOT of interest. This video was simply great! I still think it's great! And, it fits right in with this subject. You do have to watch all the way to the end to understand the technology behind this. It's awesome!
Click here. - roam1ExplorerI would love to sight see by day and have my rv drive me to the next destination at night while I sleep.........awesome!
- Dutch_12078Explorer IIII don't think autonomous vehicles will be fully viable until that's all that's out there and they can communicate with each other.

It already happen over a year ago, but technology is ironing the glitches.
How long it took to move from "brick" cellphone to Iphone?
really? which SDV does not require the occupant in the left front seat to pay attention and be ready to intervene? and the evolution of the cell phone is not a valid comparison. - Kayteg1Explorer IIAirplane autopilots have tens of years, but airplane and field tractor don't have curbs, no stop lights, no head-on collision and other things.
- DutchmenSportExplorerActually, the technology IS already in the US. My next door neighbor works on the family farm. They farm a LOT of field. My neighbor was complaining to me a few weeks ago. He said his job is simply too boring. Their tractors are all run on GPS. They program in the field, turn on the engine, and the tractor does it all. Cultivates, plants, and harvests. It knows exactly how to turn around, make perfectly straight rows and never overlaps itself. The "driver" just sits there.
I saw him a couple weeks ago and he was all charged up and energized. He said he finally got to drive the tractor that was not self-automated and he had to actually turn the steering wheel!
The technology has been in use in the USA for quite a while now. We're just not aware of it. No wonder some of those tractors and combines cost 3/4 of a million dollars! - Kayteg1Explorer II

SDV's will not be a "thing" until and unless the occupants can go to sleep, read, play games, etc. while in motion. and I don't see that happening anytime soon.
