I'd like some clarity on the California towing speed limit

I just got to California yesterday and noticed the signs that said vehicles towing trailers are limited to 55 mph. I wasn't sure if that applied to me towing my toad (not a trailer) but I slowed down anyway just in case to avoid any problems. I don't want to be pleading ignorance to the CHP.

I'm nearly certain this means that tractor trailers should drive 55 but I noticed they routinely drove 59 MPH. Probably taking advantage of the cushion most law enforcement officers allow.
  • Spent all my life in California before retiring - speed limit is 55mph for you. You need to stay in the right two lanes unless an interchange is coming up.
  • You are towing so the maximum speed for you is 55 mph. You have three axles on your motorhome, according to your signature photo, so, in California, you are considered a truck and your maximum speed is 55 mph regardless of whether or not you are towing.
