If the axles do not have tapered locking washers then pulling the axles is fairly simple, but if they do it can be a real pain to get these locking tapers to turn loose. You can make covers from cardboard but you stand a chance of ruining the gaskets on the axles.
You do not have to mark the u joints as long as you do not take the sliding parts apart. A 1/2" or 9/16 wrench is all that's need to take a drive shaft out.
I would still have my Monaco towed with the front wheels lifted, but only high enough to clear the pavement. Raising the front up too high is going to drag the hitch which I do on some driveways. I have not damaged my frame doing that... even getting hung up to where I had to manually raise the back and lower the front to give the tires enough traction to continue. Yes, I go some places most would be smart enough to not go.
