OP: That smell may be the gas from the stove, since you mentioned that it was not lighting properly....maybe not enough LP to ignite, but enough to smell?
I agree that it sounds as if the problem is flow related, since the problem began after you made changes to the LP system (disconnecting the spare tank hose).
It may be that you are having regulator issues. I have heard of folks having problems when they use the spare tank hose (and regulator) because it tied into the main tank regulator (depending on how it's plumbed)....which would reduce the LP pressure to a point that the furnace wouldn't run.
Does the water heater run on LP?
