Inside Cover for Shower Skylight

My rig has a 21" skylight in the shower area. It lets in a lot of heat. I want to stuff something up there to block it off. I haven't been able to find any ready made solution as the only ones I've come across measure only 14". Any ideas? Thanks.

  • This has worked for the last 10 years on my 2002 Discovery. The shower sky light has two parts and the inside part comes off with screws. I put some silver car type window cover with some bubble wrap in it between the two skylight parts. You can buy the silver stuff at Home Depot or other Hardware stores. It comes in rolls and I have used the rest in my front window of the RV in intense sun light and heat. Just take down the inside of the skylight lay the silver stuff over and put it back. It could work.

Mine is press right up to the glass/plastic/top, with a reflective silver heat shield, so I have not noticed any heat or condesation issues.

  • My "Carefree of Colorado" Skylight Shade measures about 24 x 31". Cost about $50 5 years ago.
  • Can't find the link but one forum member had the best idea.

He cut a piece of solid colored plexi and the way he affixed it was IMHO ingenious. He took the existing screws out from the skylight frame and added those mirror clips to it, put the screws back in. So when he wanted to add the cover all he did was flip the mirror clips over it to hold it in place. Easy up and easy out and no holes drilled into anything.

Me, I haven't gotten around to doing it that way just yet so I just bought the 'removable' limo tint from Walmart.

    Cut it to fit
Spray soapy water on it and the skylight and put up and squeegee out the bubbles.

Because I have an split bathroom open floor plan the sun coming thru that skylight was baking the MH in summer. Limo tint up and the temp in the MH dropped 20 degrees.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I'm heading out tomorrow to score some foam. Already have the reflective stuff.

  • Yup - go to any fabric store and buy a piece of foam big enough to fit. I used some marine vinyl to make a light shield on ours - held it up with some snap fasteners so that it can be removed easily.
  • I used foam, cut close to the size a little larger, that press into the skylight, stays put.

Puchased some Foil Silver heat shield, cut a piece of that to sit on top of foam.

Got the foam from a shipping department(work), and the heat shield material from Walmart.

Makes a big difference with keeping the heat out & down! Cheap and easy to install and take out if necessary.
