Install rear view system

I want to install a rear view camera system and was wanting to get some advice from someone who has done this upgrade. I have a class a motor home with a camera in the rear. There are wires there where the camera is and but what is the easiest way to run the wires?

  • Mr mountain air I tried to post a picture of my speakers so you could tell me how to take them off but no way to attach. Anyway I can see that working
    Thanks
  • If you have lights or speakers in the ceiling, then take out the ones on the center to the drivers side. Remove the camera from the rear cap in see how they came threw the cap into the ceiling. I have rewired a couple friends this way. I have a fiber glass pole that comes in 4 foot sections. I connect a pull cord to it and push from the back threw the rear cap threw the rubber seal into the ceiling area. Screw two/three section of pole together and tape connections. Push from the rear till you can see and touch it inside the ceiling. (helps to have two people). Keep going to you get to the front. Your goal is to come down threw the left side of the front over the drivers seat or in the center of where you need the wire.

If you system comes with several wires you can tape then along the pole as you are pushing it. About ever foot tape on another wire. Use a loop where you tape to the pole. When you get to the front , just pull extra pull string and leave in place for further use.

Going under the chassis will work also, just more wire and you have to secure it more.

No sure what you are asking. Do you want to pull new wire or just upgrade the camera system.

If you're only installing one camera on the rear, just reuse the old cable unless it's defective. You can cut the ends off and solder new connectors (or just solder direct if you don't mind cutting wires if you ever have to change the camera).

If you have to run new wire, run it down the rear cap, forward along the chassis rails, and back up into the cab area is the easiest way to run new wire.

It's not very hard but you do have to work under the coach to run the new wire.

  • I completely rewired my system last year. My plan was to use the original wire to pull the new wire up the rear cap. Didn't work out so well. The original was taped in place and I couldn't get it out.

To get the new wire in I used a snake getting into the cap via the tail light, corner height light and then to center of the cap thru the center height lights. wasn't difficult but took a bit of time to get the end of the snake in the are of the lights. I also ran a pull string incase I ever need to do it again.

I did try using the original wire but was getting some picture distortion noise from some where so I replaced the video wire with coax rather than unshielded copper.

Good luck. Also got the camera and monitor from a Hong Kong internet retailer for less than $100. Color system with an LED monitor.
  • No sure what you are asking. Do you want to pull new wire or just upgrade the camera system.
