Interesting sights on the way south?

Hi,

I'm heading south from Ontario (Canada) to Arizona in about a month. I've started making a list of things to see and do along the way. I like weird and wonderful things. For example, I'm going to Elkhart, IN to see the RV museum, then Santa Claus, IN, Hot Springs, AK and probably Graceland.

I'd appreciate any tips on favorite sights along the route.

Right now it's Michigan, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, Arizona and parts in between.

Cheers,
Nui

  • Utah! It's the one State in the U.S. that has more National Parks than any other States! This time last year are trip started! I kind of didn't want to do it! It was on the DW's bucket list to go to Moab, Utah, so away I went! Arches National Park to Canyonlands National Park, then we headed South to Valley of the Gods, Navajo Twin Rocks (there is a cafe there I recommend the Buffalo Stew and the Indian Fry Bread) while your sipping on a Ice Tea! Next a little Southeast to 4 Corners the only point in the U.S. to 4 State corners (you can bend over and have one foot in New Mexico, one foot in Colorado, one hand in Utah and one hand in Arizona all at the same time (imagine that being in 4 States at one time)! Then head West to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Glen Canyon Dam, go across the Dam up two exits to the RV Park spend the day on Lake Powell, I highly recommend taking the boat ride to Rainbow Bridge, the boat captain has permits to go to Rainbow Bridge it's Navajo Scared Ground! Then onto Kanab if your a fan of the old TV Series Gunsmoke the whole TV Set is still there in Johnson Canyon. Then onto Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park then Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and finally Lake Havasu City, AZ. home of the London Bridge.
  • Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions and I will definitely plan on checking out St. Louis.

I should have mentioned that I will have my 84-year old, handicapped aunt with me. I am not exactly a gazelle either. When I say sights, I mean something that is easy to get to. My aunt needs a scooter to get around. I'm a woman - hence all the questions in previous posts, since I'm useless at repairs :-)

The route so far is to go through Soo, MI, down to Garrett/Pendleton and/or Elkhart. Then to Springfield, MO for the trolley cavern tour. After that, it's straight south and west. Arkansas is a definite both for the Hot Springs and the Crater of Diamonds. We'll also make a roundabout route to San Antonio to visit a cousin. After that, straight west to Yuma.
  • At the POI Factory they have "Offbeat Tourist Attractions" and it has a few odd places to go.
  • Nui,

First you have to decide how many museums you want to see. The
RV Hall of Fame is good, but since you are going through Michigan, you really should plan on a day (I mean at least one day) at the Ford Museums. Look up Henry Ford Museums. There are no RV parks real near by, several are in striking range. That museum complex is about everything.....
Want benchmark Automobiles? Look up The Gilmore collection. It will be a little out of your way, but well worth the stop, if you like cars at all.

I could go on like this for another few pages. But I would like to know more about your interests.

The Hot Springs National Historical Site should not be missed if you are within 100 miles (160Km) of the place.

So, if you come back with the sort of places you want to be and what route you are planning to take, I bet you we can come up with a few (hundred) more good suggestions.

Every time we return from an excursion, we find out about something we should have stopped to see, sometimes it was only a few miles off the planned track.

    Matt
  • X2 for the St. Louis Arch. Worth the time to ride up to the top and to tour the museum below. Interesting films worth seeing.

By the way, a good place to stay is directly across the river at Casino Queen in E. St. Louis, Illinois. Very nice facility with hookups. They have a shuttle to the train station - one stop and you are at the Arch park. Or buy your Arch ticket online and get free parking - there is an RV lot.
  • Branson, Mo., does your wife like Precious Moments figures?? If so they are designed in Portage ,Mo. and have there own campground. The Arch in St. Louis, Mo.
  • Hi! we are in Ontario and have recently been to Elkhart. While there you should stop in at RV parts nation ( off 92 go to roundabout and turn left, you will see Appleby's in front). Also in front of the store is an information building with a lot of interesting places to visit. You can take factory tours also.

If you drink beer or alcohol, the price of it in Indiana is unbelievable. Even Canadian beer was about half the cost as home.

Are you taking time in Ontario? If I knew you're route I could tell you of some interesting places.

    Have fun planning your journey.
