Inverter making shunt type noise, like stuck relay?

Notice a sound coming from my inverter ever so often, but regularly. Like a quick bumping noise. Found all batteries low on water. Last checked over a month ago. Any idea what's causing the inverter noise? Where do I begin trouble shooting? 2000 watt Xantrex 3 stage inverter.
  • Update. Four new 6 volts and all is well. Had two chassis batteries changed too. Sonny's RV in Chimacum. Prompt and good service, a little light in the pocket but will sleep better now. Inverter checked out fine. Thanks all.
  • Got a Costco Card. They sell batteries and will install them. I've tried all different kinds of batteries because we have a Class 8 truck tractors, diesel pickups, ATV, mowers, a bass boat and a RV. We found that Interstate batteries last as long dollar wise. Just but the highest Amp Hour battery that will fit in the box. Read this and you will know more than the ordinary RV owner

  • do you have solar ?

I would try to avoid charging with the Xantrex
turn off the circuit breaker to xantrex
this will stop all charging, turn off the inverter function when not using it
    this will minimize power drain

if the batteries get too low for things to operate, use an external charger on the batteries, it will cost a lot less to replace, IF something happens to it
  • Will anything get damaged while finding a place to change the four house batteries. Something I should do. The noise I can deal with for a few days. Recommendations for a shop in the Chimacum, WA area appreciated. Thanks

Three stage... That's an inverter /converter charger combo
And it does have a built in transfer switch, used when it changes mode from inverter to charge, that is the 'pass thru switch' for shore power

Sounds like charge overload from bad batteries, and internal short on one battery cell

BTW shunts are used with a meter for measuring power, the are big precise resistors and don't make any noise
I had to read this thread just to find out what a shunt noise was
  • Plugged into 50 amp. It's the inverter. You can feel the Bump when your hand is on it. Does sound like a transfer attempt to float charge, initialized, or what? No idea about electrical, but not the ATS. Inverter green lite showing on charge . 13.9 volt showing on house batteries while plugged in. Turn off 50 amp power, turned inverter on and Batteries showing 12.0 volts only? Batteries four years old. Surprised how much water I had to add, while trouble shooting, as I normally just need to add a little on the monthly checks wondering if batteries need to be replaced? No noise on inverter only. Green light blinking on charge cell1.
  • Are you plugged in or dry camping?
Is it your converter or inverter function. They are both in the same box.
Inverters have an internal transfer switch but I've never heard mine.

Probably need a little more info.
  • Are you sure it's not your automatic transfer switch? They'll clunk when power is put to them. I've never heard a inverter make a bump noise.
