Is anyone still using a car dolly?

WE are getting a diesel pusher (1st RV) & we have 2 new cars that are both all wheel drive and cannot be towed behind the RV.
So I will either have to trade one or just buy a 3rd small car just to tow.

Is a dolly with disk brakes a good way to go or just a big pain that I'll regret.

Dolly or Blue Ox????
Help!

Whatever you use, 4 down, flat bed or dolly there is a certain amount of work involved. It also falls into your needs. If you are doing a bunch of traveling 4 down may be best for you.

For me, the dolly is perfect. Inexpensive and easy to use. Mine has brakes.

X2, I also use a dolly. When the Kia dies they I may get a jeep so I can pull 4 down but the dolly give me lots of options of vehicles.
  • Most 4WD can't be pulled on a dolly.
But some can be pulled 4 down.

I do not like owning a third car I do not use enough that gets flat spots on the tires.

Have you considered seeing if Remco has a drive disconnect for one of your vehicles?

Never owned a dolly and never want to own a dolly

  • A tow dolly can be a real PITA. Just one more thing to deal with at a campground. Where to store it? Can't backup with it attached.
  • Buy an older used car to tow 4 down. You may even be able to find one already setup for towing.
  • I used to use a tow dolly. It doesn't have brakes because I just use it to pull my 72 VW super beetle. It only weighs about 1800lbs. Even when braking I don't even notice the car back there. I recently started using a tow bar tho. One thing I did for extra safety, was get a massive chain from home depot, and wrap it around the tow hitch, the tow bar itself and the frame of the car, then looped it back and tie both ends of the chain with a beefy padlock. That way it would be difficult to steal, and if the tow bar fails, the car won't go anywhere.

A friend of mine pulls an open car trailer, because he loads his 4 wheelers on it as well. Hookup is easy because it's a slightly lifted s10 chevy with larger tires, and he can strap it without even going under the truck since it's lifted. The trailer also has brakes hooked to a breakaway system, which he modified himself. The cable for the breakaway is attached to the frame of the MH incase the tow hitch itself fails. His MH is only like 26ish feet and he said he's never really had any issues parking.
  • We don't drive cars as we like to go off-road to check out the area where we stay. We started with a small 4x4 pickup then traded for a Jeep Rubicon. It takes less than one minute to hook or unhook. When I had back surgery my wife did it by herself in the same amount of time. If it is raining my wife holds the big umbrella while I do the hookup.

I have not owned a dolly but I have have used one and after that would not owned one. It took at least 15 minutes to load the vehicle and tie it down. I had to get down on my knees to hook the straps. If it would have been raining or muddy it would have been even worst.

Just my opinion-to each his own.
  • I tow with a dolly and as I get older it is getting harder to hook everything up. My DW wants to get a four down toad. It would be a lot easier to hookup. JMO
