Is it possible to tighten a patio awning spring yourself?

I have an old Faukner RV awning (both sides of the RV, but it's the huge one I want to repair.) I have a "lazy spring", according to the RV gentleman who was kind enough to hand roll it up for me. He said it started to retract once he got nearer to the roof.

Can I somehow remove the end cap and tighten the spring myself or is this too dangerous to attempt? I hear parts for Faukner awnings are very hard to come by, and when you do find them, they are old and likely to break soon after buying them.

I want to use this massive, wonderful awning but hand rolling is going to be a major PIA. Can anyone help me or advise me how to go about this? The RV place said they charge $80/hour for labor and he thought it would take him an hour and a half to know if it would be successful or not, but they are so backlogged, it's ridiculous.

Just looking for some of your thoughts. Thank you, as always.

Also, is it possible to remove the whole spring and treat it with something that would make it more pliable so it would accept the rewinding effort more readily?
