Is the Maxforce 10 a dependable engine?

We are looking at a pre-owned coach that has many wonderful features, but has the Maxforce 10 engine. Reading a few reviews about Maxforce truck engines which were discontinued, makes be concerned about resale if we were to purchase this coach. Any experience or knowledgeable comments would be appreciated.

And there you have it...All responses from non-owners.

As a actual owner I can say that the MaxxForce 10 works great and they have no more (or less) issues than any other comparable diesel engine. Not having to deal with the DEF is a nice benefit.

The only problem, is there are way too many non-owners providing bogus information, usually spouting the issues that the larger engines had in trucks.

Like with everything else, reviews are everything. Just ask all the Amazon providers.
As for needing to own before deciding to comment, tell that to those, who decided against the purchase of a Yugo.
With what we bought, I did as much research as humanly possible, besides looking over, quite a few of them and still there's things we missed, so most people aren't about to buy something with a bad reputation, to begin with. Not the same apples, you might say. Well maybe not, but again, the stink tends to stick, regardless.
That link that someone provided had some bad news and lawsuits on a CAT engine, but it was directed towards C13 07 models. This doesn't keep folks from denouncing all CAT's, though. Just read some of the bashing threads, that are out there, along with the fear of buying any coach that has one in it.
Meanwhile, with Cummins leading the Motorhome pack, they've had more than their share of problems, but it's never been with every type of their engines and some are among the best in the industry.
Maybe a vintage Detroit would be without issues, eh?

  • The Maxxforce non-def engines are a night mare and you should not even consider anything with that engine. After International Havester realized the error of their ways, and went with def for emissions, the engine was better but still with problems.

Better safe than sorry, so story short, I'd run the other way and then do a lot of research on your next find, as well.
  • And to think in all the years of RVing, I once thought, that buying a DP, meant, paying only once and then for driving it forever, without issue.
WRONG!....and just saying that it's not just Maxiforce that's had problems over the years and at one time or the other with their different products.
Well, so far so good with what we have and probably one of the better ones of that era, it seems. Just make sure, your CAT is a pre 07, if you should decide to go with this manufacture. I'm still partial to CAT for whatever reason.
  • Had a neighbor with one and he had a lot of issues before he got rid of it. All I remember was engine stuff.
