Not a "wives tale". Your fresh water tank can grow bacteria that could, under the right circumstances, kill you or at least make you very sick.
Perhaps, but there is a time frame on it. What is it? If one sanitizes their tank today, how long is it good for? The more water they put into that tank, the less the sanitizing is effective. How long does it take? How many tanks of whater before should it be done again?
It varies. I use city water and only sanitize the tanks if I have let them sit over a month without draining and refilling. If I was on well water, it would probably be 2 weeks instead.
With regular use, I am constantly rinsing the system.
What about those who travel and put water in at various places? Personally, we have never sanitized our fresh water tank. In the TT, we never used it with exception to see if it worked. And then we drained it. On the motorhome, we used it once last year. We don't consume the water in the tank. No matter if it came from our home or not. I can't see the inside of the tank, so I have no idea how clean or how dirty it is. Chlorine will "hopefully" kill or take care of whatever is in there. Again, we do not leave water in our tanks between long periods of time between trips. We will probably sanitize it as soon as they replace our pump.
