Am I thinking clearly here? I might still get the 12-ton variety for the speed advantage, but I want to be clear that I'd be doing this for convenience rather than safety or functionality.

To my way of thinking your thinking is very sound. There is no speed advantage to the larger jacks, they are slower! Unless you are talking the 12 ton air over hydraulic?
