Bad idea its 55 miles one way, what was the person thinking that told you that. Lots of things to do in Key West - I guess it would work if you only wanted to go down once.
I would look at Bluewater Key, its 14 miles from Key West - expensive but the best campground out of the 200 I have stayed at in the last 5 years
