Kwikee motor drives can be repaired

The power step in my 1987 El Capitan would work intermittently, like a loose connection or a bad ground. I disassembled the gearbox and found everything OK. Then I took the motor apart and found that the ground return connection at the brush was weak. On the photo of the motor internals you can see how the small copper wire barely connects with the motor body, which is the ground. The connection is made when the cases are screwed back together, I just pulled slack on the wire before assembly and now it works like new. I did buy a new motor from Rock Auto, which never worked. They would not allow me to return it, so be careful with Rock Auto.

  • Couple years ago, gear box had broken teeth
I bought a new gear box and new motor online
    I think it was Amazon
Except for the motor wiring connector, it was a perfect bolt in fix
Splicing the wiring took care of the electrical connection
  • I would never buy the motor online again. You need to be able to compare the old with the new. I doubt anything is available that is a drop-in replacement without some kind of modification to the mounting bracket. You may have to re-use the worm drive assembly which doesn't wear out normally. Be careful when removing the drive, as the brush plate can come loose. Getting it back into place is difficult, the springs need to be retracted fully so the brush can go back in. Latch the spring on the mount bracket temporarily.
  • I bought a motor from Auto Zone several years ago and they have given me a new one twice since----cheap forever fix
