Kwikee series 32

I repaired mine without removing a heck of a lot easier if you can work on your back. I did drop the gear but thankfully I found it.

Call around these people get smashed up steps and might have the parts.

You obviously do not have a Kwikee step but a LCI Coach Step. There is NOTHING on a Kwikee series 32 that would require removing the step. Even the LCI Coach Step, you do not have to remove the step to replace the parts. Doug

I disagree with this. I have replaced the Series 32 step motor/gear drive on my 1999 Class A F53. The fasteners holding the gear box to the step frame were rusted and stripped out requiring that I remove the step mounting frame which also had rusted attaching bolts which stripped out of the coach mounting frame captive nuts. I cleaned (derusted) and powder coated the steps and mounting frame prior to reassembly using a new fasteners and a new gear drive and motor.(updated design) In theory, I shouldn't have had to do what I did, but that wasn't reality in my case. The large gear inside the drive box exploded in my case. I was unable to locate new drive gears separately so I just bought a new gearbox/motor assembly. ($250.00 in 2013) It works fine now. IMO, the old motor/gearbox was a POS. IMO, regular dirt/water spray from the right front wheel/tire doesn't help the assembly.

I have probably replaced MORE kwikee gear housing in the past 5 years than anybody on these forums and have never had to drop the step. The 4 bolts that hold the gear box are Carriage bolts. You just slightly loosen the 4 step mount bolts to let the step hang a little and install the 4 new carriage bolts. Now, if the step needed rust clean up and paint, then removing is the way to go. BTW, those 4 Carriage bolts come with the new Gear Box housing. Doug

PS, The most common cause of failure(motor or gear linkage assbly) of a Kwikee step is lack of cleaning(dirt/mud removal and lubing the pivot/linkage points. This is explained in the Kwikee owners manual, which nobody reads, then they blame Kwikee.

Look at Page 70. It shows the motor with the gear and pin below the motor. THOSE parts are not available. You have to purchase the complete gear Box assbly if you lose the gear and pin. Doug

I wondered about that too. There is only ONE TIME anything ever "Fell out" on my steps..

It is my belief that Kwikee uses "2nds" for the motor. the motors often have a "Dead spot" and if it stops on a dead spot. the steps won't work.. Tapping motor with hammer (handle end) moves it just off the dead spot and steps work again.. next page

So I opened the transmission (After spreading a tarp below it to catch anything that fell) and "re-indexed" the motor so it stopped at a different spot (Sounds hard but it simply means when I opened the tranny and removed the gear the steps retracted half way. I put the gear back and that's that) .

But with the tranny closed up (Screws in place) NO WAY can anything fall save the entire step assembly.. And I fixed that too.

You mention that the unit has "fallen out" several times. Do you mean the entire step motor assembly? Why would this happen? If it were me I would solve the root of the problem and replace with a new unit. Sounds like the individual gears aren't available anyway.
