Have you lubed it with something? Mine was acting up, not going all the way in. I didn't lube it because I figured that as loose as the whole mechanism is, nothing should be binding that lube would help. After looking at it a couple of times and headed under it again. I took a can of WD-40 with me and gave all of the step hinge points a shot. Haven't had any more trouble out of it.
Easy and cheap fix, just the way I like them.
