Kwikee step problem.

I have a Kwikee 2 step system that has stopped working. The steps are in the retracted position and I was wondering if there is a manual release to get the steps to open so I can get to the motor, control module, etc. One other thing, when you turn the switch on you can her two clicks coming from the steps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • This is some info I have collected over the years from various threads for Kwikee steps. Maybe there is some info that will help.

    Trouble shooting chart HERE

There is a trouble shooting guide HERE

If you need sources for motors or parts check the following:

    Motor

    PARTS 1

    PARTS 2

    PARTS 3
  • Thanks for the info. As soon as it dries out from the rain, I'll check the ground and the connections first.
  • They are famous for having bad ground over the years. Check the ground wire mounting first and remember the warning above. I replaced a motor with a Lincoln LF PW motor years back. Those things do have the torque to remove fingers when they start up. It is always good to count fingers before and after working on them.
  • You can try giving the motor a tap and see if it will make it work, the motor stops all the time is the same place and some times the bushing gets burnt and stops working. If that doesn't do it there is a pin in the linkage with a cotter key you can take out to let the steps down. On mine I can't get the pin out with the steps retracted so I unbolt the plate the motor is attached to, to work on it. DO NOT TRY AND WORK ON IT WHEN IT'S HOOKED UP TO POWER IT CAN DO REAL DAMAGE TO BODY PARTS IF IT STARTS. Un plug all the connections before trying to take it apart.
Most of the motors on the older ones are Ford power window motors and cheaper to buy at the auto parts store. You mite try and unplug all the connectors and replug them to see if that will do it.
