The strip lights that I used were waterproof; loose inside a rectangular silicone sleeve (I have seen some that are actually "sealed" in a clear silicone that is literally part of the strip). Again, I've had no failures, and actually checked the temps when I first installed them. Never rose above 125 degrees F after being on for 4 hours, at 13.8 VDC, in 85 degree outside temperature. So overheating has not been an issue with mine.
