Leveling with hydraulic jacks

We have a Southwind 36 ft. New to us and also new to us are the use of leveling Jack's. We leveled some of the wheels with blocks to get close then used the Power Gear Jack's to finalize the level. We can raise the front and/or raise the rear individually which we did. The problem is we still get a lot of bounce walking or moving around in the motorhome.

What is the proper way to level with Jack's and to minimize the bounce.I am assuming the Jack's could hold all the weight of the motorhome but you would not want the wheels dangling. Is there a sequence that should be followed to get level with minimum bounce?

    Leveling:
    1. level the rig side to side first with blocks of wood, ie. 2x10 blocks of wood of various lengths.
    2. level the rig from front to back with your hydrolic jacks.
    3. finally, buy some good chalks that you can adjust to put pressure on the tires. The chalks should fit in between the tires not the kind that you just place in the front and rear of the tire on the ground.
  • Leveling jacks will only reduce the amount of bounce. Remember they are leveling jacks not stabilizing jacks.

Generally it's ok to raise the front wheels off the ground if needed, but leave the rear tires on the ground, and chocked to prevent rolling. Rare but it happens.

Unless you have a severe situation try leveling with just the jacks instead of the blocks. That's what they are for. I think I read somewhere level side to side then front to back.
  • when I had a motorhome with jacks I never also used blocks, etc. I had HWH biaxial jacks and just pushed the button to raise as the lights indicated. a couple of times I had to raise the front enough that the front wheels left the ground. never the rear wheels.

  • You use the jacks to do the complete level. You do not have to use blocks. The jacks are more than capable of supporting your RV. IF you have a Gasoline model, then movement and "bounce" will be normal even with the jacks leveling the RV. Doug
