A company would go broke trying to maintain support of all it's legacy operating systems. In your case it's very likely the newer maps are too large for the storage capacity of your old device. Ask me how I know. And since you can't upgrade the memory on the older devices you are forced to buy new. Some of this is planned obsolescence. The newer models have slots for expanded memory to mitigate some of this problem in the future.
