Lift for towing cars?

Does anyone make a lift (hydraulic, elec or ??) that would lift the front of a tow vehicle off the ground so it could be towed? Something like what a tow truck does, but obviously more compact. It seems with fewer and fewer new cars that are not towable 4 down, that something along this line would be the answer.

I've seen them ... all with a tag axle.

looks like a lot of frame reinforcement. I did notice the rear of the MH drops significantly trying to lift the vehicle. Couldn't see if it carried all through the frame or if the rear of the tag flexes the frame.
  • Also look at what happens to a tow truck when it uses a wheel lift. there is quite a bit of weight taken off the front axle. Sure an RV is heavier, but there is considerable overhang from the axle to the bumper.

Send Ivylog a PM he Tows His like this also a Prius

Not sure how but he has Pictures!
  • I saw a Prevost with one. I doubt most RV type frames could handle it. Tow dollies are a major PITA. I will never have one again.

Obviously the cheap solution would be a dolly. I am sure someone could or has made something like you are talking about but you are in essence turning your RV into a tow truck. I can't fathom what the reinforcing structure to your RV would look like to accomplish it, not to mention the electric or hydraulic components. A dolly puts the weight on the dolly wheels. Lifting up the front end of a car with the MH would put all that force on the MH. I don't think there is a MH on the market today with a hitch rated to actually handle the weight of the front of a car and questions arise as to counter balancing the front. Also a question of supplemental braking. Tow trucks are designed to have 2 sets of wheels carrying the weight of the vehicle, as well as a stout hydraulic lift. MH's and their frames are not designed that way. Actually with all the rear wheel overhang on a MH I'd say it's designed not to handle it. Not saying it can't be done, but with a dolly readily available for much less money, why bother?
  • Great idea. I wonder if the frames of today's motorhome would support the weight?
  • That would put a lot of stress on the motorhome. Why not just use a tow dolly?
